On Saturday, 29 September, 30 cadets from the Northwestern High School NJROTC Unit in College Park, Maryland, visited the Tamaroa for the day.
The cadets were divided into three groups that rotated through three basic areas of shipboard activities: Operations, Engineering and Damage Control.
The Operations rotation covered the operational aspects of life aboard a naval or coast guard vessel. Along with a tour of the major operational areas of the ship, there was instruction on watchstanding, dead reckoning, material conditions, shipboard life and routine, small boat operations, to name a few.
During the Engineering rotation cadets were able to tour the engineering spaces and learn about main control, main engines, generators, reduction gear, pumps, etc.
Most popular with the cadets was the Damage Control rotation, where they were not only instructed in the basics of shipboard damage control, but also were able to don fire fighting gear and to spray Baltimore Harbor with water from a hose.
All in all, it seemed that everyone, cadets and instructors alike, had a fun and educational day! Please take a moment to browse the photos below:
