When I left boot camp i was stationed on the Tam, back in the early 80's. We were patroling when we hit 40 ft waves and were being thrown about pretty good. The anchor chain covers were breaking loose and a fellow seaman was told to take someone and go tighten them down. He grabbed me and we headed out. Being new I didn't relize we needed lifelines. When we got up to the bow he told me if the bridge yells down at us to drive on to the anchor chains and hold on.
Well, thats what happened and as i watched him grab the chain i stood up and turned around, all i saw was water, no sky, clouds, just water. It washed me all the way down to the fantail, everyone started looking for me and found me in a heap hehehehehe. Banged up my leg pretty good and spend awhile in my bunk. The Tam went through the Perfect Storm and this one i just mentioned. She was dependable and definitely worth saving. She will always be part of my life. Biggest mistake was to go to Petaluma and go to SK school. Wish I never left the Tam. Best part of my time in the Guard.
